The Physics behind the Music
with Travis Barclay
NOTE: This is a class for rising sophmores, juniors and seniors. Playing an instrument is not a prequisite. Only curiousity is.
Explore the fascinating connection between physics and music in this interactive week-long Wilson Summer Class, This course delves into the science behind how music is produced, transmitted, and received. Through a combination of discussions, demos, and hands-on activities, you’ll discover how the principles of physics bring music to life.
Ceramics: Intro & Expert levels
with Alison Flanagan
This course puts students into MBA's real working pottery studio led by Ms. Flanagan, an accomplished ceramic artist herself.
Beginners learn the fundamentals: hand-building, glazing, firing, and understanding clay as the medium it is, and has been for thousands of years. As students grow, the training ramps up fast.
Intermediate and advanced artists tackle complex forms and larger-scale work leading to portfolio-ready pieces that don’t just survive the kiln—they stand out. These students will have the opportunity to use the wheel if they have already learned the basics.
Whether a student has never touched a wheel or they’re already producing gallery-caliber work, the class meets them where they are and pushes them further. By the end, every student walks away with stronger technique, real creative confidence, and a body of work that proves it.
Introduction to A Cappella with the Head of School Singers
with Matt Smyth
(This is one of the largest classes we host all summer, and it's a CLEAR favorite of the students who are vocal veterans and those looking to become one!)
Singing has affected all of us at one point because it's one of the most fundamental aspects of the human experience! Singers at MBA learn to use their voices, stand tall and share with confidence. If you ever wanted to improve your singing and learn to work better with others in an ensemble then MBA A Cappella Camp is for you!
Singers in the MBA A Cappella Camp will:
*Learn the basics of a cappella singing
*Develop fundamental musical skills
*Learn how to perform with others
*Learn and perform pop, rock and classical songs
*Enjoy a great week of music making with friends
Lastly, You might find that many requirements of the Music Merit Badge can be met by this class. If you have designs on obtaining this merit badge then work with Mr. Smyth WELL BEFORE the class takes place to see how many requirements you can meet!
Battlebots! Robotics at MBA: Rising 8th through 12th
with Dr. Lech, Dr. Armstrong & Dr. Lankford
This mid-afternoon camp is for MBA students ONLY.
Want to learn the serious side of robotics through our new competition of Battlebots? If so, join the Robotics Team (8th-12th grade) and watch how they build their robot for yet another lengthy competitive season. You can come for just one, two, or three of the days. It's up to you!
The opportunity listed here is for all non-robotics team members --especially seventh graders who will be thinking about joining the team as 8th graders.
If you are on the robotics team, this is a required camp to start the year (which will be longer than the dates here), as always. You will be reporting to the camp for all four days (Mon-Thursday) 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
You will learn the new Kilobots (high school battlebots in TN) system and work with one of the teams to build their competition robot. This will be some of their first meetings for the year, so you would be joining them largely on the ground floor.
We know there are several conflicts with "beginning of the year committments," but typically everything is done by 3:00 pm.
Finally...the merit badges. This class has the opportunity to provide a lot of requirments for a few of them (the most of any of the summer classes really): Robotics, Programming, Electronics & Digital Technology. If you want to get some credit for these bages work with Dr. Lech WELL AHEAD of the class's start date.
Again, this camp is for MBA students only.
Camp ENDADA!
with Catherine Hollifield & Alison Flanagan
It's back again...this class is crucial to planning the festival with maximum student input on the whole process. If this is something that interests you then sign up today.
ENDADA is MBA's premier student-run festival with a mission to celebrate music and the arts. Festival planning begins in the summer as we evaluate last year's festival and plan themes and overarching goals for the new year. Although this festival often seems geared toward the visual arts or music students (and we would love to have you!) - most skills/hobbies at MBA - from web design, video editing, fundraising/finances, product placement, organizational abilities, creative writing, etc. - are useful and necessary for ENDADA. If you are interested in learning more and helping out - please sign up!
Please Note: Attending this workshop is not a commitment to working with ENDADA after school, during the year. It is for this one day only. Send any questions to Ms. Hollifield or Ms. Flanagan
Will run
MathCounts
with Joann Welch
BY INVITATION ONLY
This is one of the best and most prestigious academic competitions MBA has to offer. It's relegated to junior schoolers and these kids are typically handpicked to be on the team by the coaches. Thus, this one is by invitation only. However, if you have interest, and you got the math chops, drop Ms. Welch a line and see what he says! The best way to make the team is to practice over the summer, and that's why we offer it at this time.
